I supervise in topics relating to the study of natural discourse in its many and varied contexts of use, drawing on systemic functional linguistics, with a particular emphasis on the work of MAK Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan. This approach combines influences from anthropology (Malinowski), sociology (Bernstein, Gramsci, Berger and Luckman etc), and incorporates early 20th century American linguistics (Sapir, Whorf), Prague School linguistics, and British linguists such as J.R. Firth.
I do not supervise in the following fields: genre theory, LCT, cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics (unless based in SFL), CDA (unless based in SFL).
I am interested in language in natural contexts, in the study of literary text, in translations, in pedagogical discourse, in political and media discourse. I have two free, online courses you can access to see my approach:
Living language: the systemic functional conception of text in context
An Introduction to Functional Grammar, Halliday and Matthiessen 2004
