Clause as message PART 1 (chapter 3)

This talk relates to Chapter 3, Clause as Message, of An Introduction to Functional Grammar, by Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004. In this talk I:
  • look at how Halliday defines the textual function,
  • consider Theme in relation to Halliday's 'function/rank' matrix
  • define and identify Theme
  • look at options in English for making exactly the elements you want the point of departure in a clause

Clause as message PART 2 (chapter 3)

This talk relates to Chapter 3, Clause as Message, of An Introduction to Functional Grammar, by Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004. In this talk I:

  • look at Theme in relation to metafunction
  • consider the relationship of Theme and to the interpersonal system of mood
  • introduce the idea of 'marked' and 'unmarked' Theme
