Clause as exchange PART 1 (chapter 4)

This talk relates to Chapters , Clause as exchange, of An Introduction to Functional Grammar, by Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004. In this talk I:

  • introduce the idea of speech function
  • look at the grammatical system of MOOD in English
  • look at the structural elements of the clause from an interpersonal perspective: e.g. Subject, Finite, Predicator, Complement, Adjunct

Clause as exchange PART 2 (chapter 4)

This talk relates to Chapter2 4 and 10, Clause as Message, of An Introduction to Functional Grammar, by Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004. In this talk I:

  • look at the interpersonal systems of POLARITY and MODALITY
  • introduce the idea of 'grammatical metaphor'
  • explore a little more the idea of speech function, introduced in part 1
